Under the new name of Congress Palace Palma, the events section of the Nuevo Pueblo Español offers a magnificent array of services for any kind of event. Mallorca Food: An Introduction

Thanks to its privileged location and mild climate the island of Mallorca provides us with many of the diverse products so typical of a Mediterranean diet. The Mallorcan diet combines fish and sea food, with the wealth of vegetables and fruit produce on the island. Add to that a culturally rich gastronomic calendar and you have a varied and emblematic diet, of which the Mallorcan’s are rightfully proud.

Mallorca has now become a significant gastronomic destination, and its chefs and restaurants have been gaining prestige and fame worldwide. One of the main reasons why this has taken place has been thanks to the variety and quality of raw produce available. Not only the seafood and vegetables but also produce such as fruit, olives, almonds, olive oil, cheese, meats and to complement it all some outstanding wines.

Probably the most well known of Mallorcan food and products are the Ensaimada, the round pastry covered in icing sugar, Sobrassada, the red sausage made from the black pigs and the liqueur Hierbas, made from aniseed. But Mallorca offers many more products and dishes and more and more of the island’s chefs are reviving old recipes and reproducing and developing Mallorcan classics.

Tradition, time of year and religious festivals, have created a Gastronomic calendar in Mallorca which can be traced through foods typically eaten at any given time of year. The crespells, empanadas and rubiols which are typically prepared at Easter are a prime example.

A traditional Mallorcan restaurant is typically known as a Celler, because they are often located in old cellars where wine used to be made. Live music on the terrace at Son Bascos

Food and wine festival to be held in Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar, the picturesque village which has recently featured in a major TV commercial is planning a new food and  wine festival to be held in the village on the 21st of July.

The festival will be called ‘Eres Negre’ and is primarily a tribute to the ‘ramallet’ tomatoes which grow on the terraced farms in the area. Ramallet tomatoes are the variety of tomato traditionally used to rub on bread for a typical Mallorcan Pa amb Oli.

The area is also home to Malvasia grapes, a variety which had all but disappeared on Mallorca, but which has been recovered thanks to the dedication of some local wine producers. These local wines will also be on show at the festival.

Eight bars in the village will be offering a portion of tapas and a glass of Malvasia wine for the price of 2 euros. There will be live music for extra ambience and the organisers hope locals and tourists alike will flock to the village to enjoy its local gastronomy and beautiful sunsets.

One of Banyalbufar’s wineries, Son Vives, is featured on Skyblue Mallorca. The award winning wines by Son Vives, feature the famous Malvasia grape and are a delight to drink.

Miquel Oliver Winery celebrates its 100th anniversary

Congratulations go out to Bodegas Miquel Oliver in Petra on their 100th anniversary.

The winery was first built in 1868 and was bought by Melchor Oliver in 1912. It was then inherited by his son Francisco and is currently run by Miquel Oliver and his daughter, the enologist, Pilar.

Pilar is constantly working on new ideas for creating new wines and then each wine is launched under its own brand name and with its own particular marketing campaign. The winery has been awarded a constant stream of national and international prizes and has been selling wine to the public since 1912.

You can visit this centenary winery on Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and 15:30 to 18:30. The visit includes a wine tasting which can be conducted in various languages. Make sure you book in advance if there is a large group of you.

Miquel Oliver winery uses a wide range of grape varieties and their star wines include red wines Aia and Son Caló and rosé wine Alegria Rosat Miquel Oliver.

New venture in Llubi: DaiCa by Chef Caty Pieras

We follow the best Mallorca Chefs and try to keep you up to date with all their latest news and achievements.
Someone we have been following for a while now is Chef Caty Pieras, who until very recently was head chef at Es Vi Restaurant at prestogious Castillo Hotel Son Vida.

Caty has now paired up with David Ribas to open a new restaurant and boutique hotel in the centre of Mallorca, in the village of Llubi.
They have named their new establishment DaiCa and Caty offers seasonal Mallorcan cuisine at the restaurant while the petit hotel offers 3 beautiful boutique style rooms.

These Mallorcans both come from extensive careers in the restaurant industry and strive to present customers with quality traditional and signature cuisine at affordable prices, all within a charming atmosphere.

Special New Season Menu at Zee Restaurant

Zee Restaurant in Cala Estancia has recently announced a new tasting menu for the 2012 season.

Every Thursday evening at Zee you can now enjoy a Tasting Menu created by Chef Hilbert Sluiter, with matching wines for 49 Euros per person.

Bri Restaurant

One of the latest additions to the SkyblueMallorca website is Bri Restaurant.

Bri is located in the centre of the Mallorcan capital, Palma, very near to Plaza España.
Owned by Pere and Pep, Bri is a refreshingly different establishment which not only offers a comfortable and contemporary decor, but also an exciting daily menu which invariably includes vegetarian and gluten free options.

The restaurant is not vegetarian per se, there are always fish and meat dishes available too, but resident chef, Pep Socias, loves to create delicious meals using a healthy dose of local vegetable produce.

Bri Restaurant only opens in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday on which days it offers a 5 course tasting menu.

I Foro de Turismo y Gastronomia, Food Fair in Palma this week

This week sees the first edition of the ‘Foro de Turismo y Gastronomia’ being held at restaurants in Palma de Mallorca. The festival hopes to promotes Palma’s many restaurants as well as its local Mediterranean/Mallorcan cuisine by offering specially priced menus at lunch and dinner at some of the best restaurants in the capital.

An update from Es Vi Restaurant, Son Vida

Chef Pablo Mirañas

Es Vi Restaurant at Castillo Hotel Son Vida, in the exclusive area of Son Vida, Mallorca is now open for the 2012 season with cuisine by chef Pablo Mirañas de Cadiz.

Chef Pablo Mirañas is originally from Andalusia in southern Spain and specialises in creating traditional tapas dishes for Es Vi guests and diners. The tapas cuisine fits in well in this informal bodega or cellar dining area. The tapas incorporates traditional favourites as well as more local variants, such as a delicious Mallorcan tumbet. Diners will enjoy combining the dishes with a glass or two of wine selected from the extensive in house wine list.

For a perfect selection of the tapas available why not try the Tapas Tasting Menu (Menú degustación) which includes five dishes of innovative tapas, selected and prepared specially by the chef – for €40.

Es Vi is open for dinner from 19.30, from Tuesday to Saturday.

New at Piero Rossi, Puerto Alcudia – Sunday Brunches

From the 1st of April, you can have a great Brunch buffet every Sunday from 10.00 to 15.00 at Piero Rossi 1988.

Fira del Vi, Pollensa Wine Festival 2012

Coming up this weekend in Mallorca is one of the highlights of the gastronomic events calendar on the island: The Fira del Vi, Pollensa’s popular wine festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday, the 21st and 22nd of April.

If you are on the island this weekend, please do take the time to visit it, it is well worth it and a truly unique opportunity to try some of the island’s wines.

This is the ninth edition of this wine fair and the motto for this year is:
‘‘Wine is a work of art. The same grape varieties can be used to produce very different wines.’’

36 different wineries will be taking part, including wine makers from Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

On purchasing an entrance ticket you are given a wine glass and can then wander from stall to stall trying different wines and meeting the winemakers in person.

The fair will be open on Saturday the 21st from 10:00 to 20:30 and on Sunday the 22nd from 10:00 to 14:00 and takes place at the Claustre del Convent de Sant Domingo in Pollensa.

News from Macarena de Castro

Macarena de Castro & Carme Ruscalleda

We have been catching up with Macarena de Castro, local Mallorcan chef and owner at Jardin Restaurant in Alcudia, awarded a Michelin star earlier this year.

Macarena well deserves the Red Guide’s accolade and continues to work tirelessly exploring her passion for cuisine, both here and in Mallorca as well as much further afield.

Her restaurant, Jardin, is closed during the winter months of the year, so she let us in on what keeps her busy when her kitchen is closed to the general public.

This year Macarena travelled to Las Vegas, where she worked alongside Chef Julian Serrano at none other than the Bellagio Hotel, and Santo Domingo, where she hosted a conference for local dignitaries and the Spanish ambassador.

On returning to Mallorca in March she welcomed a very guest to her restaurant. Carme Ruscalleda is the first chef in Spanish to be awarded 3 Michelin stars, and Macarena was honoured to have her at Jardin.

Jardin is now open again for the season and is well worth a visit.

Every Friday during April different restaurants in the Calvia area of Mallorca will be offering specially priced menus for the Calvia Food Festival, Mostra de Cuines de Calvia.

The restaurants taking part will be offering menus for 10€, 12€ or 16€.

Every Friday different restaurants will be taking part, and the menus will be offered from 13.30 to 15.30 and from 19.30 to 01.00.
