Tristan gives up its Michelin star

The big news this week when it comes to the world of gastronomy in Majorca, Spain has got to be Tristan Restaurant in Puerto Portals giving up its Michelin star.

On the 15th of February 2012, Tristan Restaurant issued a press release announcing that they were relinquishing their Michelin Star in order to reinvent themselves as a more informal fish/seafood restaurant.

Tristan earned a Michelin star for the first time in 1987 and was awarded two stars in 1990. Its gourmet cuisine is internationally renowned, with heads of states, movie stars and other VIPS numbering amongst its patrons.

Now, less than three months after receiving their star for 2012, the restaurant has announced that it is letting the star go in order to pursue a more informal restaurant idea in the form of a fish and seafood restaurant which will be called Tristan Mar.

The Tristan Mar will open officially at the end of March and hopes to attract a more wide-ranging clientele. Chef Gerhard Schwaiger will continue to be in charge of the kitchen and will use this opportunity to adapt his cuisine according to seasonal produce and his own creativity.
