New Awards for Son Prim Winery

Son Prim Winery, located in Sencelles, Mallorca is no stranger to awards and prizes. Its wines have been consistently receiving awards since 2005, in Spain, Brussels, Switzerland and Germany.

This year, it seems, will be no exception, and the winery has already been awarded two prestigious awards and a very significant mention in Spain’s most well known wine guide.

Son Prims Vintage 2008 wine, which is not even on sale yet, has been awarded a Gold Medal to both Son Prim CUP 2008 and Son Prim Cabernet 2008 during The Berliner Wine Trophy 2011.

The wine estate’s red wines also come highly recommended and have been mentioned in the Spanish wine guide, Guía Peñín de los Vinos de España.

This is not only a great setting, but promises to be a delicious meal too. The Chef at the Gran Hotel Soller is Javier Weil, and he makes his own personal mark on the lunch by including something made using Soller oranges, every week.

And to top it all, the brunch will include relaxing chill out music – the perfect way to begin or end the week!

Forbidden Mallorca Wines

Slow Food Illes Balears is working with several Mallorca wineries to recover and launch two native Mallorcan grape varieties which are currently commercially  ‘forbidden’. The forbidden varieties are Gorgollasa and Giro Blanc. The wine makers currently working with slow food and producing wines using these varieties are Bodegas Ribas in Consell, Vins Toni Gelabert in Manacor and Can Majoral in Algaida.

There was a recent presentation in collaboration with a local chef, Andreu Genestra Garcia, during which industry professionals were able to try these ‘forbidden wines‘.

Calcotadas, Calçotada

Leeks and onions are in season at the moment, which means there are various ‘calçotada’ events going across Mallorca.

A calçotada is a traditional event with its origins in Cataluña which involves getting together with friends to eat ‘calçots’ which are a type of onion, very similar to leeks.

The calçots are prepared by roasting them on an open fire, serving them, burnt black, in roof-tiles and newspaper, and then dunking the tender inner parts in sauce before eating. The eating process is as hilarious as it is delicious.

If you fancy trying one of these deliciously fun events, Sa Taronja Cultural Centre in Andratx is holding one on the 27th of March.
