Special Events in Mallorca 2011

Every year, Mallorca hosts a variety of ever popular events and activities across the island. As you probably know, a lot of them involve eating and drinking!

There are fairs in honour of certain produce, such as the sobrassada fair held every year in Campos, or the mushroom fair held every year in Mancor del Vall. These fairs revolve around food and include tastings and markets where you can try and buy the local produce.

There are of course a lot of events devoted to wine. The Fira del Vi in Pollensa, is perhaps one of the most popular of these. For a small fee, you are giving a wine glass on entrance and can then try the great Mallorcan wines on offer.

There is even an International Gastronomic Fair held in Mallorca. ‘Alimenta’ is held every  other year and is a must visit for foodies, you can watch some of the island’s best Chefs at live cookery demonstrations and try some of their creations.

Keep checking back as we will continue to add more information about special events being held in Mallorca:

Genestar awarded a Bip Gourmand

Genestar restaurant in Alcudia, run by Juanjo Genestar, has been awarded a Bip Gourmand in the 2011 Michelin Guide.

This basically means that the restaurant has been mentioned in the 2011 Michelin Guide as an establishment worth visiting.

It is a great compliment to Juanjo’s signature seasonal cuisine. At Genestar, the menu changes every day, and you can choose between a variety of menus and dishes.

Juanjo also offers a full Take Away service and can come and cook for you at your house or yacht.

Insolito Restaurant

New Restaurant on SkyBlue Mallorca: Insolito in Santa Catalina.

We love the bustling area of Santa Catalina, it never fails to produce even more culinary surprises. Insolito Restaurant is no exception. This establishment is run by Frenchman, Patrick, and serves to different cuisine types simultaneously; International (with French influences) and authentic Thai. There is no fusion of the two.

Thai Chef creates authentic and colourful Thai dishes, as well as some very fine international cuisine, including meats cooked the French way and other French bistro specialties.

This is a great place to go for a drink too; there is an extremely well stocked bar, featuring premium brandies and other liquers.

Bens d’Avall Restaurant & local produce

Bens d’Avall Restaurant, on the road between Soller and Deia in Mallorca, is already very well known.

Benet Vicens is one of the islands’ best known Chefs, and his restaurant is known to present exceptional cuisine based on Mallorcan seasonal produce.

The restaurant has just reopened after its yearly holidays and Benet has announced that the kitchen will now be using only local produce in all its cooking. This means of course that the menu will change every few weeks in line with the produce available.

Benet grows a lot of his own fruits and vegetables and sees the move as a way to support local farmers as well as the environment.

Patxi Castellano

The latest Chef we have met in Mallorca is Patxi Castellano, Chef at Tast Restaurants. There are two Tast establishments in Palma, one on Calle Unio and one on the Avenidas.

Patxi is head chef and in charge of creating and designing the delicious pinchos and tapas available at Tast.

Patxi is from Vitoria and has run his own Tapas restaurant in the past. Now in Mallorca he heads up this kitchen which serves over 4000 pinchos every day, and he continues to surprise his customers with beautifully presented creations.

One of Patxi’s most popular pinchos, a cuttlefish brochette stuffed with sobrassada, was shortlisted in the National Pinchos Competition held every year in Valladolid.

Vietnamese cuisine in Mallorca

Not many people know that you can enjoy Vietnamese cuisine in Mallorca, but those who do, go to Viet nam Cafe in Plaza Progreso, just above the popular area of Santa Catalina.

Vietnamese cuisine is extremely low in fat, but also very tasty, and Antonio, the owner of this restaurant, fell in love with it after a trip to Vietnam in 2004.

At Vietnam cafe the Chefs are Vietnamese, as are alot of the key ingredients. But the rest of the products are fresh and seasonal.

There is a great value menu of the day for 14 euros, and the restaurant can cater for company lunches or special ocassions, when booked in advance.

Wine Matching Dinner at Es Balco Restaurant

Recently we told you all about the new Es Balco Restaurant in Palma.

Now we have a great excuse for you to visit this restaurant: a Wine Matching dinner

As you know, Es Balco is run by two talented professionals who used to work with the late Joan Olives, the legendary Chef and personality who ran Malvasia restaurant in Palma.

On this ocassion Toni and Begoña have teamed up with sommelier Daniel Arias from Catavinos to offer you a special wine matching dinner.

As ever, full details, prices and menu are up on our main site, SkyBlue Mallorca.

An update from Plat d’Or

We have recently been to visit Plat d’Or Restaurant at the Sheraton Mallorca – Arabella Golf Hotel in Son Vida  and got an update from the team and its Chef Rafael Sanchez.

The restaurant has undergone something of a ‘makeover’ to match the hotel’s recent brand change to Sheraton Hotels.  The decor has been updated to suit a more ‘dressed-down’ and laid back clientele.

But in the kitchen, talented Chef Rafael Sanchez continues to create elaborate cuisine based on local Balearic produce. ‘Our priority is that our cuisine must always be fresh as well as accesible to everyone,’ says Rafa Sanchez.

Alimenta 2011

Mallorca’s very own international gastronomic fair, Alimenta, will this year be held at the Palma Arena from the 23rd to the 26th of March.

Alimenta includes an exhibition of businesses related to the food and wine industry in Mallorca and across  Spain. It is a fair which attracts thousands of business owners, entreprenuers and ‘foodies’.

One of Alimenta’s highlights is the ‘Gran Gourmet’ which is a special section of the fair dedicated to presentations and show cookings by some of Mallorca most celebrated chefs. Visitors will be able to watch these talented professionals at work as well as taste some of their fantastic creations.

The Dionisio wine prize to the best Balearic wine is awarded during Alimenta as is the Alimenta prize to the best barman and barrista.
